Aksara Jatnika- A Specimen Book of Sundanese Letters

Aksara Jatnika is my final assignment project. It's a display font series inspired by the artifacts of Sundanese culture which is packaged in a form of specimen book concept.

The idea of making this project was came from the condition of Sundanese culture in this present time. Sunda is a large ethnic group living in West Java, Indonesia. It has an unique cultural characteristic with a rich and diverse traditions. But unfortunately, the globalization that occurred in West Java led to the crisis of its culture. The Sundanese culture is slowly but sure vanished from the life of their people.

On the other hand, typography not only as a design element, but also as a communication media, has very important role in people's daily life. It has a huge potential to convey messages or informations in graphic communication.

Therefore in this case, my objective is to develop typography as an effective communication media to preserve Sundanese tradition. It is in accordance with the letters's ability (in typography context) to conveys message not only from its words but also from the visual impression of its shape.

This is how the book looks like. It is also completed with a CD which contains the ttf and otf file.
The title of the book is came from Sundanese language. Aksara means letters and Jatnika means something noble. The size of the book is 20 x 26 cm in hardcover and completed with a jacket.
I made 5 series of display font inspired by some of the Sundanese artifacts, which is Kujang, Batik Merak Ngibing, Mega Mendung, Aksara Sunda, and Huruf Kuping.

Some of the fonts that I made is using basic fonts. The process is by reconstructing the letters and combined it with the features of the Sundanesse artifacts. So then it will create a latin typefaces that represent Sundanese culture.

Each series of the font was placed seperately in chapters, in the same layout but different color theme.
