Mandala Studies

I was presented with an experimental brief, and decided to focus my experiments on Mandalas. I have always been intrigued by mandalas, and wanted to see where my experiments would take me.

In this project I wanted to try and experiment with something more than just vectors, I wanted to try working with photographs and trying to add some originality back to my work.

I presented my experiments in a journal that lasted six weeks.

I began by creating a set of seven vector mandalas, I did this to see what kind of outcomes I could produce with my skills in vector art.
Experimenting with manipulated typography
One of my favourites
Another typographic piece, the enscription reads: One Ring to rule them all, One ring to find them; One ring to bring them all and in the darkness bind them. (Lord of the Rings)
Another one of my favourites. I thought this would make a good house sign, I feel it would look good if it was a 3D object
Experimenting with various patterns
Again more pattern experiments
A bit more of a bolder design in regards to a more heavier stroke of black has been used
After I created my vector mandalas I moved onto creating more mandalas out of images that I had either found or created by myself.
I found a few images of what appear to be are dragons, with some manipulation and colour change I created this interesting concept.
I had a piece of work that I never really finished and so I thought I would see what happened when it was copied, pasted and rotated a few times.
These two really do have some lovely colours to them
So I scanned in a few of my friends hands to create a much more different type of mandala
They're very diferent to my usual outcomes of work
I got my hands on a projector and decided to project my mandalas onto different surfaces to see what outcomes I could generate. This for me opened up a whole new door which I am still exploring today.
With a few extension leads I managed to project onto my house
I tried many different projections on different surfaces at different sizes
I was really impressed with the outcome of when I projected onto my friends. It looks like a tribal tattoo of some sort. Again this will be experimented much more with in the future.
I very much enjoyed this photo. It just reminds me of Iron Man so much
Overall this project was a great success for me, I managed to produce some interesting outcomes and I also feel I pushed myself into trying something different for a change.
