Photography and information design
The photographic medium as a tool to collect and visualize data
The subject of this thesis is the relationship between the photographic medium and the field of information design. Photography is investigated as an objective tool to collect and display data. This project is based primarily on an historical research of relevant examples, analyzing characteristics and peculiarities
The subject of this thesis is the relationship between the photographic medium and the field of information design. Photography is investigated as an objective tool to collect and display data. This project is based primarily on an historical research of relevant examples, analyzing characteristics and peculiarities
of these cases. The thesis investigate a specific kind of language that is not linear, but sinsemic, structured
and unambiguous. The case studies ranging from the late Nineteenth century to the present days. It follows
an investigation that explores the structure of some artifacts and study in deep the characteristics of the photographic images used. At last, the thesis proposes a series of practical experiments that aim to explore
the characteristics previously noticed during the analysis.

Il mezzo fotografico come strumento per raccogliere e visualizzare dati
Questa tesi ha come oggetto il rapporto fra il mezzo fotografico e il campo dell’information design.
La fotografia viene indagata quindi in quanto strumento oggettivo per raccogliere e visualizzare dati.
Questo progetto si basa prima di tutto sulla ricerca storica di esempi rilevanti, analizzandone caratteristiche, elementi distintivi e peculiarità. Verrà indagato un certo tipo di linguaggio non lineare, quindi sinsemico, strutturato ed univoco. I casi studio vanno dalla fine dell’Ottocento fino ai giorni nostri. Ne segue un’indagine
che approfondisce la struttura degli artefatti presi in analisi e le caratteristiche delle immagini fotografiche utilizzate. Infine la tesi propone una serie di verifiche pratiche che mirano al riscontro delle caratteristiche precedentemente rilevate.

up things, explain stuff and to convey knowledge. In information design intention equals interpretation.
