Julius & Nero Play Hide and Seek

Author: Sabrina & Patrick Klein

Julius and Nero were enjoying a summer day when Julius had a great idea:
let's play hide and seek!
First is Nero's time to hide, and turns out this dog is a mastermind
in the art of disappearing!
Could Julius find him? Can you help him?

A beautiful and funny story, bilingual in German and English

Cover and Back Cover
This is a very special story for me, since the final idea of the book was nothing like how it started! Patrick came to me with an idea of the game between the dog and the kid, and then I thought about giving the story a bit of a twist: what if Nero, the dog, was always so easy to find, and the joke is that Julius just can't find him? I thought about the little wink between book and reader, so the story developed from there!

Also, there is a tiny easter egg in the book, do you think you can find it?
Storyboard
I wanted to showcase a little bit of extra storytelling, outside the main text. I imagined Julius and Nero played while the parents were away, and came back at night from a hard working day at the farm.
The story was though for being both in english and german.
I wanted to show a transition between Julius searching outside and moving to search inside the house, to keep a cohesive storyline.
This one is my favourite!
This are the first and last images inside the house. Can you find Nero?
There are a few of my own plushies there, aswell as some iconic characers, can you find them all?
Color Test
Final Sketches for Julius and Nero. I wanted to show some contrast between Julius soft rounded shapes and a more angular Nero.
