An tura, meaning 'white fort' in Turkic language, is a suggested origin for the name Okhtyrka,
a Hero City of Ukraine with a strategic role at the crossroads of trade routes throughout history.

Today, in the Russian-Ukrainian full-scale war, Okhtyrka became a northern outpost by defending key routes to other cities.
During a siege from February to March 2022, it showcased remarkable civilian-military unity, turning the city into a resilient human fortress.
Later, the city of Оkhtyrka was awarded the honorary distinction “Hero City of Ukraine”.
