Personal Passion Project: 3-D Mechanical Eye

My Idea is to create a 3-D mechanical model influenced by the Surrealist artistic style. Surrealism style uses visual imagery from the subconscious mind to create art without the intention of logical comprehensibility. I am very interested in the surreal paintings of sculptures by Salvador Dali and Yves Tanguy. These Surrealist paintings come from dream analysis and the unconscious and are influenced by the work of Psychologist Fraud and Jung.

The intended outcome

I will also animate the model and the environment it is in to create a captivating short movie that tells a story about the sculpture and evokes an emotional response from the viewer.

Artists who have inspired me

As I mentioned before my project will be influence by the Surrealist artistic style of artists such as Salvador Dali and Yves Tanguy. I would like to examine how these artists painted their unusual sculptures, characters and abstract forms. I will also look into the meaning behind these artworks and why they created them. Another example of Surrealist artwork I will examine is in the movie Spellbound by Alfred Hitchcock, designed by Dali.

I will also explore machines, industry and mechanical movement by visiting the Museum of Science and industry and observing the machines, the mechanics, the different parts that form this machines, how they work and fit together and how they move. I will also look at the metals, textures, forms, colours and how the metallic surfaces look in the light and so on.

Using my research file full of inspirational images, I will examine how the work I have collected has affected me, what it says to me and what I feel inspired to create for my 3-D project. Then I will sketch out initial ideas for mechanical sculptures that are suitable to develop further.

My design process

I will explore themes that are of interest to me by collecting a research file with photos, drawings, personal notes, book and magazine clippings and writings that relate to my chosen theme.

Inspired by my found research I will create a sketch book full of ideas which lay out my design process. This will begin by examining what/who inspires me including virtual world designers, graphic designers, painters and sculptures. I will then start to make original sketches of ideas for my own forms and sculpture ideas. I will then hopefully start to have a picture of what I would like to create for my final piece of work. I will then start to develop my chosen idea by sketching in more detail how it will look as a more complex 3-D model. I will also sketch it from various different angles to see how it will look as a whole model and not just a flat 2-D image. I will then think about the components of the model and how they will look, how I would like them to move and how they could move and think about all of the creative possibilities.

When I have chosen a suitable environment and animation idea I will begin to build the environment using 3-Ds Max. When I have a suitable environment I will then proceed to animate my 3-D sculpture according to the direction of my chosen storyboard. This will involve including my planned camera angles, sounds and lighting.

Technical Method I wish to employ

When my model drawings and ideas have been completed I will be using Illustrator and Photoshop to create my 2-D sculpture design. In these software packages I can manipulate my vector and bitmap images, add textures, colours, various suitable effects and type to get an overall 2-D full colour visual of my sculpture. I will also use Photoshop to place my sculpture in a range of environment backgrounds (landscapes, room interiors etc).

Then I will create my 3-D sculpture using 3-Ds Max software. By my own eye I will sculpt the form using editable polygons. I will also build all of the moving parts and then arrange them all together. I will then add colours textures to enhance the forms and make them more realistic. Also using 3-Ds Max I will animate the sculpture and make the sculpture move accordingly. I will also make the mechanical parts inside the sculpture move accordingly.

Also in 3-Ds Max I will then place this sculpture in and suitable environment and direct the form to animate within this environment or allow the environment or other elements to animate around it.

I will also use Adobe After Effects to add post-production effects like colour effects, sounds, type etc.

This project is not yet completely finished however here are the results showcased so far.
