Tbilisi Orienteering Cup Branding

Branding for Tbilisi orienteering series
This project represents a comprehensive branding for a series of orienteering races taking place in Tbilisi, Georgia, which started in 2023 and was organised by the first orienteering club in Georgia
Sakartvelo Orienteering.

The "Tbilisi Orienteering Cup" consisted of 8 races throughout the year in the largest city parks. Some races
took place in hard-to-reach places and involved a significant elevation gain.
Both amature and experienced
trail runners / orienteers participated in the series of events, around 100 people in total.
What we needed to do:
As the "Tbilisi Orienteering Cup" was a new initiative, it needed branding from scratch: a logo, an emblem, signature colors, awards/medals designs and some merchandise for prizes and for sale.
What we had from the start:
The Sakartvelo Orienteering club already had a graphic logo (in the left corner below), which needed a matching textual part. The existing logo provided a color pallette, that was used later for the "Tbilisi Orienteering Cup" branding.
Next:
An emblem for the medals needed to be done in a flash. Which then was accepted as the "Tbilisi Orienteering Cup" logo.
Moodboard:
The minimal Abel Bold font, the symbol of Tbilisi – the Mtatsminda mountain, orienteering map symbols, the established color pallette and the classical square with diagonal color sectioning of the orienteering flag.
Implementation:
The first quick logo draft (on the right below) was inspired mainly by the Mtatsminda mountain, the height marks, that appeared very often on the maps due to the local mountainous terrain, and the triangle-shaped sequence of the orienteering signs repeating the silhouette of the mountain.

Then came the alternative draft (on the left below), cleaner, more simplified and minimal, easier to scale for various media/merch. It was used more often later on.

The black elements, including lettering, are accent, simple, bold and contrast, while the white and orange background balances the whole appearance with roundness and fluidity.
We made stickers with new logo quickly and used them on the medals, then we got a pair of large flags printed for the start/finish place decoration. We also made some higher quality medals later on and got some cups printed for the winners and for sale.
That is not the end of our collaboration, we have so much more things in the process, such as stone carved 1st place award for the series final, branded t-shirts and caps, etc.
Thanks for watching!
