Immer Forwärts, Nimmer Rückwärts, 2011
Installation created during an artist in residence program 'the creative district'.
Commissioned by Kulturetage, centre for arts and culture Oldenburg, Germany.
Installation 2011 is no Political reply or approach, unless the subtitle ‘Immer forwärts, Nimmer Rückwärts’ mightsuggest so. This proverb was found on a postcard of Oldenburg. I found theproverb connecting with the feeling I experienced among the people I met. Iexperienced a kind of restlessness among the people, about the plans for urbancity planning and renewal in this ‘Creative District’ area; The place wherepeople rather want to see their artistic and cultural district growing, insteadof being planned by the local governmental initiatives.
Thecultivation in theis area fascinated me by the diversity in architecture,characteristic for this area. There area houses, Villa’s in classicistic stylefrom the late 19 th, early 20 th century, after war livingblocks and 70’s office cubes and modern buildings from the 90s, side by side.There is a strong willing to realize ideals and develop this small andunpopular suburb to an attractive area, the ‘Creative District’ of Oldenburg. Acertain feeling of restlessness, but also optimism.
Forme this was the motive to create this installation in the ‘garage’, a hiddenroom in the ‘bahnhofviertel’, just behind the building of Kulturetage, thecentre for ongoing cultural and artistic activities. In between the buildingsthere are hidden places, left in anonymity where man can find calmness, whereit is quiet. Places that are almost forgotten. One of those places is thisgarage I discovered. I wanted to show this place to the public, how nice andbeautifull it actually is to be there.
