"Cleats" Plaster of Paris, 2005
This carving is a study of the relationship between what information is and is not revealed from an object. In this piece, I speak to the loss of craft in mass produced objects (or cleats in this case). The more that is revealed, or as more objects are mass produced, fewer objects hold the unique mystery and excitement that comes with individually crafted objects. The topmost cleat is the most realized of the pair and is pulling away the more it is carved away from the rough block that reveals only a hint of the second cleat. Although a sense of mystery arises from the tension between the state of realization of each cleat, the the angles of the shoes creates a sense of movement in an otherwise static piece.
