Cardboard: Red-Tail Chair

Red-Tail Chair
Inspired by the Red-Tail Hawk
Inspired by the red-tail hawk, this chair uses the Fibonacci natural number sequence and the Golden Proportion to aid the design of the chair. The overall, spread-winged form of the chair comes from a hexagon that has been adjusted by the Golden Proportion to acheive the ideal angle between back and seat. The chair is made of 156 laser-cut layers of corrugated cardboard and western red cedar slats. . When glued together all layers become one, creating an extremely strong structure. This structure allows a significant amount of material to be removed from the center while maintaining structural integrity; hence the large silhouette of the hawk cutting continuously through the center of the chair. The spray-painted layers have a color-sequenced pattern of 1,1,2,3,5 that repeats itself. The number of layers for each color relates to the approximate proportion of color found on the hawk species itself. The symmetrical design of the chair allows it to be rocked, via curved pieces of wood at its fulcrum, to sit on either bottom of the chair.
