The Fragility of Symbolism

. :: FOR THE RECORD :: .

This is a project where I chose to explore the notion of symbolism in relation to how symbols can be manipulated and transformed symbolically through the perception and influence of an audience. Throughout my investigation I explored how well-known symbols have transformed since they were first developed, with specific analysis towards symbols that have had their symbolism changed such as; The Pentagram symbol, Hippie symbol, Illuminati symbol and the Swastika.

I proceeded to explore the symbolism of the Swastika due to its contrasted history from having ties of auspiciousness and good intentions within Hinduism and it's ties to the Nazi Party during the Second World War. During the investigation I interviewed members of the Jewish community, Hindu community and general public of different generations in order to evaluate how an ancient symbol that has been around for thousands of years has become contaminated by recent history, which has resulted in being recognised as a symbol of evil along with concluding wether the Swastika can be salvaged to be a symbol of rememberence of people who suffered under its presence during the second world war and also be restored to its original status as a sacred symbol within Hinduism.

. :: Due to the sensitivity of this investigation, the project was treated with sincere understanding and was not produced to intentionally aggrivate any community.
