BAPE was founded by one man - legend has it, Nigo, with a little help from his friends.
Like most Japanese streetwear brands, the brand was born in the Harajuku underground scene.
Nigo opened a clothing store, NOWHERE, with fellow Undercover contemporary Jun Takahashi, and then began working with designer Sk8thing on his own clothing.
By launching the brand on a shoestring budget (Nigo can only produce about 50 t-shirts a week), he inadvertently invented two elements that form the backbone of today's streetwear model: exaggeration and deficiency.

Como a maioria das marcas japonesas de streetwear, a marca nasceu na cena underground de Harajuku.
