Theater programs are souvenirs but they’re crappy souvenirs. At best they give you something to read while you wait for a performance to start and then maybe they live in a box in your house somewhere. Rarely are they special or worth showing anyone. In short, not a very exciting thing to make.
Still any chance to make a thing is a chance to make something worthwhile so I immediately started bouncing around ideas of what physical object might make someone look at the program with new eyes. We only had a budget of $500 to produce 1000 pieces so almost everything was mentally shot down before I had a chance to really think it through. But I already had postcards on the mind since we were producing some to promote the show so I said what if we just put a bunch of postcards in a clear envelope? Each postcard could have its own content with a photo on the reverse and there would be the novelty of getting this compact and unfoldable object rather than a crappy brochure.
The final package is two 6 x 9" postcards printed with a beautiful photo and a spot varnish sealed in a crystal clear envelope. There’s just enough thickness to the package that it feels substantial but no so much that it seems wasteful. Our hope is that the combination of an attractive appearance, novel format, and heft cause the recipient to put the package or individual cards on display or show them to other people.
