CONTRASTS OF VERNACULAR TYPE
This project refers to Carl Dair's 'Contrasts of Vernacular Type.' By employing typesetting and typographic design, we crafted a booklet centered on typefaces and typographic distinctions. This typographic endeavor heightened our recognition and appreciation of the letterforms and typefaces that encompass our daily lives, aiding in the identification of specific classifications and letter characteristics that significantly enrich the field of design.
DESIGN PROCESS
Photographing Signage
Distinctive signs found across the streets of San Francisco were captured in photographs. Various typographic forms, anatomy, and classifications were meticulously examined, with a single representative chosen for each letter of the alphabet. Each selected letter possesses its own distinctive personality and unique characteristics.
Editing and Cropping
Upon finishing the entire alphabet collection, each image underwent editing and cropping to isolate a singular letter presented in black and white. These letters were then incorporated into the booklet as design elements, serving as illustrations of typographic contrast.
Grid Layout
The booklet's layout adhered to a structured grid comprising 5 columns and 6 rows for its composition. Emphasizing consistent layout design across all pages was crucial to ensure a unified presentation. This structured organization provided a framework for arranging the title, body text, and images in a cohesive manner.
