THE 6 CREATIVE STRATEGIES
Project for 01 for ART235: Graphic Design at Brigham Young University - Idaho

This project is a compilation of compositions designed to use one random, yet simple object in a variety of ways to demonstrate six specific design strategies.

The object I chose is an orange.
Combination: This strategy is about bringing together two unrelated things to create a new object that still makes some sense. The orange as the sun is an unusual representation, but it works because of the overall orange coloring of the sunset scene and the fact that the orange is the same shape and color as the sun.
Isolation: This strategy focuses on one element in a composition by separating it visually from its surroundings or other objects. The orange is successfully isolated because it is different in obvious ways from the apples and it is not in the same crate with the group of apples.
Physical Similarity: This strategy uses physical similarities to show connections between objects that wouldn't normally connect. The orange and the basketball connect in color, texture, and shape, but in reality they are very different from each other.
Metaphor: This strategy is focused on the meaning of the image created, with the object as it relates to something else. In this composition I superimposed an orange texture over a mask.  The metaphor implies that taking your vitamin C is like putting on a mask.
Change of Context: This strategy contrasts two objects with unnatural environments to highlight a concept or communicate an idea. Oranges don't fall from the clouds but rain drops do.
Material Swap: This strategy swaps a material that we are accustomed to with another object. This composition could also illustrate physical similarity since the basketball and the orange do have some of the same qualities.  But I chose this as a material swap example for obvious reasons.
