I created a Thorin Oakenshield costume for my husband, Jack, and somehow convinced him to enter the FantasyCon "Quest of Emberfire" cosplay contest. He really owned it on stage, and won the "Best Fantasy Costume, Solo" prize, which was surprising and incredible. Everything in this costume was created from scratch except the plastic Orcrist sword, which was purchased and I repainted. I made everything but the oakenshield shield, which Jack sculpted out of pink foam.
