Japanese Notan- Giraffes

JAPANESE NOTAN

The intent of the Japanese Notan project was to create a "flipped" black and white asymmetrical composition using positive and negative space.

This project was created for Grand Canyon University
DDN-101 Design Thinking
Final Notan Composition:
For my Notan, I created two giraffes in the jungle with leaves and vines around them. To compose this, I sketched my idea onto a piece of 5"x5" black paper. From there, using an exacto knife, I cut out my sketches then "flipped" them onto a piece of white paper, making it asymmetrical. To finalize my composition, I glued all of the flipped pieces down.
Notan Sketches:
For this project, I created eight sketches total. I came up with 4 different ideas, and made 2 versions of each idea. All of these sketches resemble asymmetry and negative space with a central subject.
