How to Survive Family Dinner (Infographic Poster)

HOW TO SURVIVE FAMILY DINNER
(INFOGRAPHIC POSTER)

BRIEF
This project required me to create an 18"x24" infographic on any topic. I designed a poster that is visually appealing while effectively providing advice for the viewer.

CHALLENGE
Family dinners can be stressful times. I chose to create an infographic that provides survival tips for holiday family dinners, advising on managing conversations, navigating sensitive topics, and maintaining a positive atmosphere. The graphics use humor to navigate potential stress and enhance overall enjoyment. This infographic focuses on certain types of family members that could be at dinner and how to make the most of the situation.

POSTER DESIGN
For my infographic, I chose to base the graphics on a dinner table and what would be expected to be on it during a family dinner. I also wanted to give it a holiday vibe since that is the most common time when families are together. This includes a warm and brownish-orange color palette.

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY
My research was based on the aesthetic of family dinners. I aimed for a more natural look in the graphics while maintaining a warm atmosphere. I included different dishes typically served at family dinners, such as turkey and pie. For the main points, I referenced things that could occur or be present during dinner.

I drew a lot of inspiration from Aryn Lei, who has a collection of playing cards centered around submitted stories, titled "At The Table." Lei states that "each card celebrates the universal experience of coming together around a table to make, play, eat, drink, converse, and, above all else, connect." I admire her art style, so I experimented with shadows and highlights on the graphics, similar to her approach.

SKETCHES
For this infographic, I had a difficult time figuring out how I wanted to arrange my information. Initially, I wanted to incorporate graphics of the family members, but I decided to focus on the table itself. The sketch on the right is a better depiction of what was to come for the final project. Although the sketch isn't the most detailed, I wrote down the information I wanted and matched it with the appropriate graphics.

REFLECTION
Overall, I enjoyed this project since I'm more accustomed to poster design compared to previous projects. Although I had a hard time figuring out the composition, and there is always room for improvement, I'm very pleased with how it turned out.
