Cartography Museum
This project addresses the fundamentals of museum design, both on a specific level in relation to its focus, maps, and as a museum in general.

It does this by focusing on particular weaknesses in museum design; these include program, audience range, and connection to museum subject. Specifically, this building serves to create a continuous but open circulation path. It includes a secondary program, bowling, which reaches a much wider audience than cartography alone. And it engages mapping on a local and global scale.

The idea of mapping is addressed thought the structural columns. Not only do they serve as a form of vertical circulation and observation, they also function as vectors pointing to various cities around the world directly though the earth.
Below is a diagram showing how the angle tangential to the earth's surface and the compass bearing can be found between points on the earth. This data has been gathered in order to generate the primary columns visible in the structure.
