The target market for this zine is people that have a similar personality to me and have a deep love for fashion and flowers or just any random person that wants a fun, girly and fashionable zine in their possession. People that study fashion or are interested in fashion would enjoy looking at the zine that I hope to create. The objectives of this zine are to arouse interest, explore different types of floral fashion, interconnect flowers and fashion, look striking, unique and fun, leave a lasting impact on any viewer because of interesting visuals and define who I am as a designer. My zine is called: Just floral it! The reason for coming up with this name is because I thought it sounded cool and is relevant for the theme of my zine. The reason why I am so excited to create this zine is because I am not limited to designing a specific thing, e.g. One specific flower. I can design multiple flowers and they will all express my theme and idea. I also want to add a few interesting and extra elements in the zine like a mini zine for example, stickers and a cut-out design of some sort for one of the pages of the zine.

Almost everything contained in the zine will somehow be about flowers i.e. Natural flowers, flowers in fashion (floral prints), flower/floral patterns and flower related illustrations. The design of my zine will include both illustrations and typography exploration. I will handcraft certain elements whilst also design other parts of the zine using design software such as Adobe Illustrator and Adobe InDesign. I want this zine to have a mix of both digital and traditional media. I want my zine to be in the form of a booklet and should either be A4 or A5 in dimension. Anything smaller than an A5 would not be suitable for my design, as some detail might be lost. With regard to production methods, I am considering stitching up my zine into a booklet or compiling it normally as one would do when making a book and then stapling it. Another idea I thought of was to have a simple foldable zine and then tie a piece of rope over the entire zine. Viewers would have to untie the piece of rope/string to see the zine. I want the colour palette of my zine to be black, white, pinks and reds. I intend on using a bold typeface that can clearly be seen especially because I want to experiment with typography placement.

My main concept comes from combining flowers and fashion which ultimately leads to: floral fashion. Floral fashion originated during Ancient Egyptian times as certain flowers meant certain things. Floral designs started appearing on fabrics during the late mediaeval period, when China created embroidered fabrics that had beautiful flowers on them and were used for clothing. The trend then spread throughout Asian and Middle Eastern counties and eventually Europe, through European traders and merchants (Walker 2021: [sp]). Zines allow for an extensive amount of creativity. “Zines are a great way to publish your own art, poems, writing, musings, and anything else you want to express—without needing anyone else’s permission to do so” (Akbari 2018: [sp]). I find this project as one that will help me express myself in a creative way without having any boundaries on what I am and am not allowed to do. “Basically, what you can include in a zine is only limited by your imagination” (Akbari 2018: [sp]). I plan on including many different things in this zine, such as cut-outs of dresses, my very own stickers, some texture in the form of material and a mini floral-design top that I intend on stitching whilst adding some hand-made embellishments on it. Making zines is a wonderful way of expressing yourself by producing unique, alternative works of design (Creative Bloq Staff 2014:[sp]).

To set your thoughts down on paper forces you to reckon with them, decide how you really feel and what side of yourself you want to present to the public.” (Sawyers [sa]: [sp]). From my concept, I want the public to be presnted with extra knowledge regarding floral fashion along with interesting visuals that represent it.
My concept needs to be strong in order for it to reach an audience’s attention. I intend on strengthening my concept by ensuring that each page of the zine is unique, fun and informative, not only through words and text, but also through visuals and traditional media elements.
