(For those readers who are not familiar with the All for cincy FC CincinnatI player shirt and I love this allusion, the so-called “Shankill butchers” were a gang of sectarian terrorists, operating in Northern Ireland in the 1970’s/1980’s, who are known to have murdered at least 23 people (primarily Catholics or ‘suspected’ Catholics (though it is also known that they inadvertently killed two Protestants who they mistook for Catholics and six other Protestants with whom they had personal disputes). Their modus operandi was particularly heinous, bloodthirsty and hate-filled; they firstly targeted a victim, kidnapped then beat and tortured them and finally killed them using knives to cut/hack their throats or bludgeoned them to death with a hatchet (sometimes resulting in dismemberment of body parts). Most of the murderers were caught and given appropriately long prison sentences, but the two apparent leaders received a ‘form of justice’ at the hands of the IRA who murdered them (most probably as a result of a conspiracy between the IRA and the group of loyalist paramilitaries the two were serving with.)
