Semi-quantitative Research

A wearable medical device company needed to know if their concept for a premium device was becoming too large for general wearability.  The IDEO team recruited 150 users of various ages, each of whom adhered a non-functional prototype to their skin for five days.  Each participant also reported their daily experiences in a digital diary.

In addition to recruiting, the team created the prototypes, the applicators, the questionnaires, and the directions for use.  The team packed the kits shipped them throughout the United States, analyzed the data for trends, and conducted quantitative research interviews with select applicants.

Although 150 participants does not quite rise to statistical significance, all data indicated that the concept was sufficiently wearable for the vast majority of participants.  The client was able to continue development of the device with confidence.
