City Palace
Splendors from the Jewel of Rajasthan
No visit to the Venice of the East is complete without experiencing the City Palace of Udaipur. Situated on a prominent hill-top overlooking the water and the city, it is a spectacle to behold, inside and out. The complex began construction in the 1500’s and continued for over 75 generations, resulting in a rich and somehow interrelated, albeit flamboyant composition of traditional Rajasthani, Mughal, Medieval, European and Chinese Architecture. There are eleven palaces and numerous structures, plazas, gardens and galleries all built in granite and marble. One part of the complex is open to visitors, the others are reserved for heritage hotels and the royal family. The interiors are colorfully designed and full of mosaics, carvings, stained-glass windows and wall paintings. I was amazed by the craft of the laborers and designers; their ability to create the most intricate details within a flowing arrangement of spaces makes you feel like you are walking through a symphony.

Here is a peek into City Palace.
