As a graphic designer and illustrator based in Inyokern, California, I am excited to present my latest venture in brewery art — the Hoppy Longstocking beer can label for Outfit Brewing, expertly brewed by Mike Frazer. Inspiration from the West Coast: Echoes of Kona Brewing’s Big Wave
Building on Kona Brewing’s Legacy
The foundation of Hoppy Longstocking draws inspiration from Kona Brewing’s iconic Big Wave Beer Can Label. Infused with the essence of Hawaii’s surf culture, I set out to create a label that not only pays homage to that beautiful design but uniquely stands out on its own. The color palette, remniscent of ocean hues with blues, turquoises, and hints of coral and yellow, sets the stage for an adventure in beer can label design.
Character Design: Hoppy Longstocking Takes Center Stage
A Playful Twist on Tradition
Hoppy Longstocking, the charismatic character at the heart of the label, is a whimsical play on Pippy Longstocking, infused with a hop-head persona. Sporting a matching shirt to her green hop to bring balance to the composition, Hoppy sports natural red hair in traditional pigtails, playfully sticking out from her head. This lively character captures the spirit of the West Coast IPA, embodying the free-spirited nature of the craft.
West Coast Flair: A Surfing Senstaion on the Label
Riding the Wave of Creativity
To enhance the West Coast flair of this 7% India Pale Ale, Hoppy Longstocking is seems skillfully shredding the gnar, surfing a beautiful barreling wave. The sun rises behind the mountains, striping the sky with a burst of yellow that echoes through the font and lettering, harmoniously blending with the overall color palette. This design element not only evokes the essence of West Coast adventure but also adds a dynamic touch to the label’s visual narrative.
