NATURALLY ISA HAMILTON

Hi, this is a page about a school project called "Naturally". We did a lot with nature, which you may have already realised by the name. I don't usually use nature in my art, which is why I liked doing this. It was something new to try.
✦ STEP ONE

We started by taking pictures of textures we could find outside. We had to take at least 50 of them, which was quite challenging. But I enjoyed it because I never really looked at nature that way.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Here are the 50 pictures that I took:
✦ STEP TWO

While we were walking around the area taking these pictures, we also had to collect nature materials. We obviously weren't allowed to tear plants or trees apart, we had to find things that were lying around.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

These were the ones that I ended up with:
✦ STEP THREE

With these collected materials we had to experiment. We got paper and paint, watercolor, charcoal, you name it.
I stamped, wiped, painted and dotted with my nature materials onto the paper and created some fun stuff. It felt like an elementary school exercise, and I really enjoyed it. It was quantity above quality, so it was mostly about the way of creating instead of the final result.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

These are those experiments put together:
✦ STEP FOUR

Then together with the nature photos and the creations with paint, we had to create new images on photoshop. This meant putting together images, playing around with those and experiment as much as possible. Getting to know new possibilities on photoshop with filters and colors was a big part of this exercise, which also teached me a lot.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Eventually we placed those creations together in a "database" and mine looked like this:
✦ STEP FIVE

Then, out of those experiments, we choose five of our favorites. We put those apart and gave each of them two words that represented them, and also an idea for what kind of poster could belong to the image.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Like so:

✦ STEP SIX

Then we had to take these five again, but this time add two fonts that fit the image. We weren't allowed to use the base fonts that were already in the apps, but we had to search fonts on Adobe Fonts or Google Fonts. This was to prevent us from using basic fonts and finding better fonts to use, also quality-wise.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

These are the fonts I chose:
✦ HELVETICA

Now interrupting the process of this project by a random exercise. We had to create a poster series for the 60th year of the font Helvitica. We were only allowed to use a certain shade of red, black and white. We weren't allowed to add any shapes either, we were only allowed to create shapes with the numbers 60.

With very limited possibilities, it was complicated to do. It was hard creating something original since it has all probably been done before by another classmate. I still kind of enjoyed doing it, it was a great challenge.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This is what my final three posters looked like:
 STEP SIX

Now we choose one of our five images based on the poster idea and fonts, and with that image we continued. I choose my "true crime" idea, because I really liked the look of it. The contrast with the black, white and red really spoke to me.

We experimented with that one image to create a few base posters, which we were going to put our text over.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

These are a few of my experiments:
 STEP SEVEN

Out of the base posters above, I choose three of my favorites to work with. With these, I started creating text and experimenting with the layout of the poster.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

After that I ended up with three posters, which is my final poster series:
✦ STEP EIGHT

And then we had to use those posters to create mock-ups. These are examples of a poster/logo/advertisement of what they'll look like once published. Think of billboards, logo's on trucks, on websites etc. I found some pictures on google and photoshopped my posters in.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

That turned out like this:
 REFLECTION

I really liked the project because it was very personal and everyone could really express themselves in their posters. I liked how open it was and how many options you had.
