Like other European nations, Denmark engaged in a variety of colonial activities throughout the world. These operations enabled the country to develop large-scale trade of goods and contributed to the beginning of its growth from the 17th century. Although less important than some other European empires, the vestiges of this colonial system are still present around the world and remain part of the country's historical heritage.
