The Basics of the RD20 Oil Rig

Pioneered by Atlas Copco Drilling Solutions, the RD20 is an extremely popular oil rig operating at roughly 300 locations worldwide. Touting its strength, reliability, and overall performance, Atlas Copco bills the RD20 as the successful shallow oil and gas rig in the 53-metric ton class.

Beyond structural strength, the RD20 oil rig is extremely transportable and facilitates rapid assembly and easy operation in various locations. RD20 has a patented carriage feed system and detached-table structures that are both effective and efficient.

The RD20 also facilitates automated technology such as the Automatic Pipe Loader (APL). A skid-mounted, hands-free pipe-and-casing handling system, the APL is designed to optimize operations while keeping workers out of harm’s way.

The RD20 and its Atlas Copco predecessors date back to 1972. After years of established success with the RD20, Atlas Copco released the RD20 XC, built to handle oilfield external upset “bottleneck” drill pipes of various lengths.
