DES 16 Zine "The Grass Isn't Always Greener"

For project 3 in DES 16, students were asked to make an 8 page zine related to their personal identity. Specific subjects included, but were not limited to a social issue they care about or an activity they enjoy. The zine was to be entirely created in photoshop as a means to get students more acquainted with the program.

From a young age, I have been interested in sustainability and since I’ve been studying landscape architecture at UC Davis, I’ve learned a lot about the unsustainable nature of lawns. For my zine, I wanted to focus on educating the public about the pitfalls of lawns and offer them an inspirational glimpse of what they could do instead. The first spread is meant to highlight the negatives of lawns, the second spread offers alternative ideas, and the final spread demonstrates how creating a garden instead of a lawn will strengthen our connection with nature. To signify the transformation a homeowner's lawn may take from a monoculture to a biodiverse garden, the color palette of my zine becomes larger and more vibrant as the viewer flips the pages. The back page leaves the viewer with a final reminder that, “sometimes when you love something, you have to let it go,” as a way of communicating that this change is for the greater good.
