nhow Amsterdam Rai: LARGE MURAL FOR LOBBY

nhow is an international hotel chain belonging to NH Hotel Group based on a disruptive concept in which each hotel is in itself a unique work of Art, with an architecture and interior design with the utmost attention to detail combined with an innovative design based on large-scale murals that give its spaces an atmosphere in which creativity and inspiration flow on every wall.

nhow Amsterdam Rai Hotel

nhow Amsterdam Rai is a 4-star hotel designed by renowned architect Reinier de Graaf, located next to the Rai Convention Centre in Amsterdam.

The concept that inspires the art and interior design of the hotel is "the mix of cultures of the world". Amsterdam, as one of the most multicultural cities in the world, serves as the perfect context to develop this concept in which apparently antagonistic cultures are mixed on a canvas of impossible compositions, captured through a surrealist and pop art prism.

This reinterpretation of cultural symbols from a transgressive and irreverent perspective is the basis of a colourful and innovative proposal that updates the identity iconography of the world's cultures to a vision adapted to the 21st century.

Large mural for lobby
In the heart of the hotel, I designed a large-scale mural situated in the lobby corridor. But this isn’t your ordinary mural. Rather than being printed, my design was illuminated with light onto the bare wall, animating a blank canvas. Subsequently, a master painter sketched and filled in the outlines with his brush, resulting in an organic masterpiece reminiscent of street art in its purest essence

The creativity of the composition hinges on the central theme of the hotel: the amalgamation of global cultures. This theme acts as the backbone, taking shape in a surreal tableau divided into three visual tiers that interact and intertwine.

In the foreground, closest to the observer, a series of iconic Japanese characters, alongside emblematic koi fish, move and leap over waves. These waves, with their stylized motion and fluidity, evoke the unmistakable style of the Japanese artist Hokusai.

The second tier introduces a composition woven from Japanese vegetation, African masks, and Mexican ‘catrinas.’ This cultural patchwork enhances the waves with a lush visual landscape, dotted with nuances and intricacies inviting detailed observation.
Lastly, the third and final layer displays a background landscape crafted with brushstrokes of traditional Japanese style. This layer adds depth to the mural and sets the stage for the preceding layers, rounding out the composition with a touch of serenity and balance.
The end result is a mural that not only decorates but also tells a visual story, an ode to the fusion of cultures and the exchange of creativity.
