Japanese Pink School Architecture, Manifesto

Designing Tomorrow with Japanese Pink School Architecture (Manifesto)
University of Melbourne, Master of Architecture, 21st Century Architecture by Jonathan Lovell, 17 November 2023.

Contemporary Japanese architects should embrace the principles of the Pink school.

Pink school represents a “refreshing portrait” of Japanese architecture today, especially when considering that international media coverage of Japanese architecture often appears to be dominated by a focus on the White school and Red school. Architecture historians and critics like Fujimori, have always acknowledge that the “relationship between “tradition” and “modernity” has never been a static one (Oshima et al., 2013).

This entails not only re-examining traditional materials and construction methods but also pushing the boundaries of technology and engineering within the field of architecture. In doing so, they can strive for a symbiotic approach akin to Kurokawa's, which offers a reflective response to the traditions of the Red school, while celebrating both the simplicity and advancements of the White school.
