Rex is the first robotic dog with a body made entirely of composites, as well as the first design project of a Russian-developed robotic dog. This project was carried out as part of the experimental and challenging task of the startup High Tech Engineering. In 8 weeks, based on the existing hardware, it was necessary to develop a design and produce a pre-production working prototype. The design had to be flawless, and the prototype had to withstand possible falls during maneuvers.

In-field research of analogous robotic dogs.

Define a moodboard to define robot's aesthetic characteristics.

Flowing Surfaces - Automotive Feeling - Solid Shape

Due to a short timeline, switch to a cad design development after few sketches and define an overall design direction.
Decide to design for composite production due to a project ambitious objectives and timing.

Use VR for design review with engineers and approvement from the client.

Refine such design details, as battery opening, LED lights, Intel real sense cameras positioning, legs mobility, etc.

Define the name of the dog and elaborate graphics

VR review for final design approvement and choice of the prototype material, color and finishing.

Visit a composite production factory, chose carbon and alutex for manufacturing.

With design assistance, team of engineers develops a structural frame, metal and plastic mounts for motors, LEDs and cameras.
