National Restaurant Association Predicts Job Openings

Since its inception circa 1919, the National Restaurant Association (NRA) has worked to improve conditions in the restaurant industry. It focuses on members’ interests, introducing innovations, and promoting overall industry growth. In May 2023, an NRA press release announced an increase in job openings.

The NRA took statistics from the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS). The BLS reported that the industry added 24,800 jobs in April 2023. In September 2023, the number increased to 60,700, although many accounted for seasonal adjustment. Overall, in the first quarter (January-March), the industry added 180,000 restaurant-related jobs and 100,400 jobs in the third quarter (July-September); it mentioned no figures for the second quarter.

The job growth outpaced pre-pandemic levels, with industry experts reporting more room to grow. Furthermore, growth occurred at quick service and fast casual restaurants (117,000 jobs) and bars and taverns (51,000 jobs), both above pre-pandemic levels.

The May 2023 NRA press release stated that over the past 28 months, the economy added 2.5 million jobs, making it the job creator in the private sector.
