In times of Islamophobia, this series sheds light on some of the nicest people I've ever met while traveling around the world, transcending mere photography. Allow me to introduce you to the Hijabi Skaters and Hijabsters of Malaysia. Not only do they adhere to the principles of the Islamic religion, but they also challenge prevailing stereotypes perpetuated by the West.
These young women wear the hijab as a symbol of respect for their faith, while simultaneously enjoying the freedom to express their individuality and personality through the skate culture and against some misconceptions and stereotypes, their parents wholeheartedly support their dreams of becoming skaters. This series is not a protest or a call for equality; rather, it serves as a reminder of the beauty found in diverse cultures and how we can coexist harmoniously.
Both guys and girls come together to practice at a skate hub called Tuju Cafe, fostering an environment void of drugs or alcohol but brimming with respect and harmony.
