ISTD - The South African Body Politic
The objective of this project is to enhance the accessibility of the voting process for present-day
voters and encourage young people to get involved in politics. A project has been started to make voting more accessible and understandable to young individuals, empowering them and bringing about positive change. The power to influence the minds of young individuals lies in making the voting process more accessible.
The project aims to encourage the younger generation of South Africa to make
informed voting decisions and prioritised accountability and responsibility from political parties. The objective is to create a sense of hope and aspiration for a fully functioning democracy, allowing the audience to identify false promises and work towards one
South Africa for all.
Encouraging impartiality and emphasizing the positive impact of insightful voting on
our country, the strategic approach is to empower South African youth aged 18-25 not necessarily to displace the current ruling political party, but rather to encourage the SA youth to vote with discernment in order to get the best possible political party as rulers of our country. Using persuasive techniques, the project aims to foster a sense of national citizenship and responsibility, instigate interest in voting processes, and reorient political change in South Africa through a hypothetical political party called HOPE.
A hypothetical political party with a hopeful and idealistic nature has been created to showcase South Africa's potential for a promising future. The party embodies honesty, transparency, dignity, freedom, justice, and peace, with a comprehensive manifesto outlining its goals and principles. The manifesto includes excerpts from various
existing manifestos (ANC, EFF, DA) and notable speeches such as Nelson Mandela's
and Martin Luther King Jr.'s, emphasizing the message of unity toward a greater good.
The political party is designed to be a visual representation of several active political parties in South Africa. The aesthetic includes bold, block-lettered typefaces and primary colours, drawing inspiration from political campaigns and resistance art. The manifesto text comprises different voices speaking towards a communal goal, and the posters communicate the four main pillars and their accompanying values of the
HOPE Political Party.
Asterisks, footnotes, and in-text-referencing form an integral part of this project,
because the manifesto text comprises an array of different voices speaking towards
a communal goal, being quoted from different political parties' manifestos.
