Removing Identities

Take an existing space and change it’s identity. Create a new journey but keep routes and doorways as they are to maintain functionality.
A new journey through a space in Nottingham Trent’s Arkwright Building. Based on the ideas of unease and a decrease in sense of direction from Miroslaw Balka’s The Unilever Series. Also with reference to the disorientation, voids and light channels from Daniel Libeskind’s Imperial War Museum and Richard White’s installation at The Cube Gallery in Manchester.
A physical and visual journey which represents the spatial, structural and design experiences I have explored throughout my first year at University. As you enter the building from the ground floor and it appears to be a maze, plenty of spaces to take notice of but which way to choose becomes confusing, much like the amount of information to take in at the beginning of the year. As you ascend up the staircase it over looks the entrance representing the need to take in and use the knowledge we were gaining. Into a tight, dark corridor with stairs it feels scary and claustrophobic, much like the struggle to suceed until rays of light appear to guide you up the rest of the stairs. At the top of the space you have the choice to enter a small, black room or travel a little further and reach a room filled with natural light. This symbolises the harder you work the better off you will become.
