Book Covers - Hatchet

Hatchet by Gary Paulsen
The book Hatchet by Gary Paulsen, is a survival book - not a survival guide. The book is about a 13 year old boy who gets stranded in some forest in Canada, after realizing that he won't instantly be found, he tries his best to survive alone in the woods for who knows how long?
Designer's Choice
Above, is a book cover meant to look like the title of book was carved out of a tree. This design was actually carved by hand and digitally edited to stand out more. During the process of carving, I was trying to figure out how a word would look if someone without experience were to try and carve a message in a tree. I thought it would be a good idea to use an actual hatchet and chop out the letters, rather than guess and whittle out the letters with a knife - it would also be more realistic if it weren't neat looking.
Handmade
Above, is a book cover constructed of construction paper and chalk. I went through a couple ideas of how to do a handmade cover, but this is the one that ultimately came out better. I started off doing a messy coloring of brown chalk to look like dirt, and then I neatly colored the hatchet and tree trunk with like colors. It's framed with construction paper meant to look like trees framing a path in the woods. I wanted the main focus to be the hatchet, without the hatchet taking up a majority of the cover.
Type Only
Above, is the simplest book cover of all three. This one is just type, and it was pretty difficult for me. I couldn't find a font that worked for me, nothing seemed like it fit with this book. So I decided to make my own font, I took bark off of a log and assembled the letters of the title. From there I scanned the letters, and I colored them the color of wood (not the bark this time). And the green is meant to resemble the forest, in a subtle way.
