The 1080v13 project began as a reset for the model series. The team opted to really analyze every component, material, geometry consideration, etc. in order to achieve a new running experience. With this heightened refocusing effort, some new learnings were uncovered in the form of the FreshFoam geometry. The design team crafted a new tech platform definition update with this 1080 project, which extends to numerous other projects in the NB range.
Compression grooving was quickly identified as a functional lever to pull into the 1080 design, as well as the FreshFoam collection language as a whole. Strategic groove channeling allows impact to be precisely tuned to both enable soft landings in the heel and snappier rocker transitions during toe-off. The 1080v13 is an example of this grooving allowing both dichotomies of running forces to exist within one shoe.
Early into the exploration stage for this new platform identity, a tiered execution of the FreshFoam language began to emerge as a strong moniker; a visual diagram of the compressive nature for the midsole material that evokes a sense of softness and articulation.

The upper design sought to achieve a balance of intuitive cushioning and variable support in select areas. A wholistic approach to finding that balance resulted in material selections that offered precise engineering for lock-down in the midfoot region, while not inhibiting or constricting the runner's foot in areas needing more dynamism. Additionally, trims and details were explored to further elevate the premium nature of the shoe.
