This exercise was proposed by ESAD through the collaboration with the company Dedal, and consists on the development of a solution for the space of the traditional portuguese kitchen.
The basket was developed through the basic concept of growth in height, just like the resolution of the lack of space in big cities, which grow upwards, because they can’t grow further to the sides. It was designed to be produced by local artisans who combine the practice of traditional techniques with local raw materials.
After a research trip between Caldas da Rainha and Batalha, an area known for its various basketry techniques, the ideal material was found, the bunho, from Ribatejo.
To acquire the desired shape, the bunho is wattled in a spherical mold, so that after the mold is removed, the craftsman can punch the bottom of the basket.
