KILLER CONVENIENCE

THE PROBLEM
A Food Desert can be described as a geographic area where residents access to affordable, healthy food options (especially fruits and vegetables) is restricted or non-existent due to the absense of grocery stores in convenient travelling distances.

Today, about 2.3 million Americans (about 2.2 persent of all households) currently live more than one mile away from a supermarket and do not own a car. Urban areas usually grant access to public transportation to help overcome difficulties posed by distance, however, many residents are forced to catch multiple buses or trains to make to make a shopping trip, which can become a major barrier for many families.

Distance is not the only factor contributing to food deserts. Economic forces have driven grocery stores out of many cities in recent years, forcing many families to rely on smaller stores, with very limited selections of food. Typically the food sold at these stores are “cheap” meats, dairy based foods (high in fat, sugar, and salt), and processed foods (snack cakes, sodas, and chips).

It is documented that societies that have diets consisting of mainly meat, dairy, and processed foods are XXx’s as likely to get cancer, high blood pressure, and diabetes. These are a few of the many factors contributimg to the problem of Food Deserts in the United States of America.

THE PROJECT
I created this project for my Graphic Design Studio II Class at the Savannah College of Art & Design. It is a mock up of a possible campaign that could be run by a non-profit. The site that the images refer too is non-existent as far as I know.
