So, What Are You Anyway?

Photo Essay on Mixed race people and their commentary as such
Perhaps it’s the human condition, orthe brain’s natural desire to classify, but it seems that peopleare obsessed with asking, “What Are You?” Of course, classification makes it simpler for us to digest the overwhelmingamount of information we consume, but in the question of race, whyisn’t it enough to be American? And if you happen to be a mix of afew races, which box are you meant to check off? For the first timein history, America elected a man many consider to be our first Blackpresident. But President Barack Obama isn’t only Black, is he? Some might be outraged if America referred to Obama as the firstBi-racial president. As if calling him Bi-racial would deemphasizethe fact that a Brown man is leading the White House. It would infact, only point out, that he is not only Black.
Like many of the people in this book.
