The Art of Concealing - Part 01

The Art of Concealing - Part 01

Industrial Design / User Experience Design / Visualization

This project is an effort to reduce clutter and create a cleaner home environment that is often lost by placing necessary but poorly designed utilitarian appliances we use in our day-to-day lives. By focusing on both aesthetics and the user experience, we have transformed boring day-to-day household appliances into products that seamlessly blend in with your surroundings and your life.

Why:
Necessary appliances that create visual clutter

The Process:

A lot of work went into figuring out which household appliances cause the biggest disturbances and what the consequences of changing their user experience and aesthetics might look like. This laid a fantastic groundwork for us to work on and had a massive impact on the overall process going forward.

We also mapped the typical home interior and the market to find intervention points and choose which
products to take forward.

Various different forms and usage flows were thoroughly explored through sketching and 2D rendering. This allowed us to pinpoint which features and aesthetics to include and which ones to fore-go keeping in mind the market trends and user expectations.

The next step was to refine all our ideas to a higher fidelity and create more iterations. Creating various quick iterations in 3D helped us visualize all the forms in higher fidelity with more detail and precision.

Finally, 2 forms, one each for an Inverter and a UPS was selected and put forward.

We hid the inverter, otherwise an ugly home appliance, in plain sight by giving it a new persona. It doubles
as an entrance console, a piece of furniture designed to house all your day-to-day essentials. It stands by
near your home entrance to give you one simple solution to store your everyday carry and keep your
secondary devices charged.

We hid the UPS, otherwise an appliance with no aesthetic quality, by putting it centre-stage. It adorns a
user-customizable LED matrix screen in the front and becomes a great accessory to the user.

Work in progress prototype for usability testing and refining.
