Anitha Silvia, About Rebellion and Anarchy

Local Scene: Anitha Silvia, About Rebellion and Anarchy
Every figure has its own passion to raise a movement. A national figure Soekarno has experienced so many chaotic situations. But he could solve nearly all of them. He has mastered many languages in the world to delve everything on the Earth so he could fight against the roar of big nations

This is not about a big figure like Soekarno or Fidel Castro. This is about Anitha Silvia that also called Tinta. She maybe not as famous as Korean sexy celebrity who appears in your wet dream, but, what she has done is being bigger now. It's about her total dedication in every project she got involved.

Hi Tinta, what project do you concern right now?

This 2-3 years I am a volunteer of C2O Library which is active to hold many events. I also get involved in "Ayorek!" a platform of Surabaya's knowledge sharing and production. In other way, I am being active in Indonesian Netlabel Union (INL), a collective movement of netlabel's publicly and networking. Now it is in preparation of the second Indonesian Netaudio Festival that would be held in Bandung. Oh yes, one more, I do work in an event called Sunday Market.

Wow! So many projects, aren't there? Though, it is not really a surprise for you. How's it going?

C2O Library does not concern to make any activity. It tends to push others to make use of C2O's space and collections. Haha, it is happened because of our each project too. It is so unfortunate we have to delay Manic Street Walkers, a pedestrians' activity, and Knit Knot, a knitting club, in 2 months.

"Ayorek!" was just released in December 2013. It is a platform which brings a website, a book, and a journal to give some alternatives to collaborating with people in Surabaya and other cities. Some of contributors have begun to do observation and documentation of the phenomena in Surabaya which grabbed their attention. Ayorek has also released a netlabel named SUB/SIDE. Being influenced by Yes No Wave Music, a netlabel that has its own media and organizer, SUB/SIDE has Ayorek as a media and SUB/SIDE Live as the organizer that would do selling merchandise to fund the project.

After doing discussion with some communities in Bandung, the 2nd Indonesian Netaudio Festival (INF) is planned to be held in that town which has Indonesia's top music scene. INF is a socialization and a celebration which hold a discussion, workshop, and music performance in terms of freeing the music itself.
There has been a simple question by a magazine, "what is the best festival in your town?" I answer it, "Sunday Market." Within its "international" line in every edition, Sunday Market has been a place of Surabaya's and the other cities' (Yogyakarta, Malang, Bandung, Jakarta) youngsters gathering. They have shared fashion knowledge, food, and art. Currently, we are preparing Sunday Market vol 5 "Love Affair" that would be held on February 23 in Surabaya Town Square.

Is your project being in an anarchy way? Or maybe it's a kind of rebellion?

Haha! Of course it's not anarchy. We do what we need to do, I like reading, so I'm being active in C2O. I want to share any information and knowledge about Surabaya, so I join Ayorek. I respect and proud of musicians who free their own works and also founders of netlabel which curates the music itself, so I'm doing works in Indonesian Netlabel Union. I amaze Alek Kowalski who struggle to the concept of Sunday
Market for 5 years before it realized in the last of 2012, in terms of the need: to hold a festival to gain the creativity of youngsters in Surabaya.

Even all those creative events are not yet supported by the government, but it is important to us as citizens to have initiation to moving on what we need.

What are anarchy and rebellion in your viewpoint?

I think, I would skip this question.

It's okay. Anyway, you have done some works/movements in some cities. Overall, what kinds of movement that locals do? Is it anarchy or rebellion? Or both? What do you think?

I'm sorry, I don't really know about (music) movements in Surabaya. I just wait the news from friends and social media. All I know is that DIY gig getting really rare now. The latest gig(s) I know is YY's (Yoyon, Klepto Opera) gig, whereas, some friends who are in college having more chances to hold DIY gig. It's very unfortunate if they're just waiting us who have already been 30's to hold a gig, haha!
But, the good news is... there are proactive media: Ronascent, def-n, and Ayorek!

You are an activist in Indonesian Netlabels Union, what do you think about SOPA, PIPA, and ACTA?

It's a copyright issue. It is so important, especially in US, which the condition is so much different than Indonesia. You can sue someone/corporation/organization that is proved as a subject of piracy and appropriation, or illegal downloading. Copyright is so tight and stilted. Facing the freedom in the internet era, US government has released SOPA and PIPA.

As one of the activist, where do you take side? Pro or against it? Why do you chose it?

When SOPA and PIPA have been blown up by many media like Wikipedia and Creative Commons, we, Indonesian Netlabel Union, also support it. Wok The Rock sets his profile picture in facebook/twitter to the picture of US congress members who supporting SOPA and PIPA with the word LIE at the corner. It is a campaign of resistance. I support the campaign because I feel the importance of free knowledge. It is once connected to the freedom of making (art)works.

ACTA is not only about US and Japan. It's also about Europe and any other countries. It has so many responses because it threatens the independency of creativity and innovation. During my activity in Indonesian Netlabel Union, I start to learn this issue and about copyright.

What is your opinion about freedom?

Freedom is an access to get cognition, produce it, and distribute it. Fortunately, the projects I get involved is about freeing cognition. They are library, Ayorek, and Indonesian Netlabel Union.

We heard about an incident in a book discussion event at Dr Cipto street several days ago. How do you respond?

People and government have so less cognition about history of Indonesia. Of course, it is the outcome of colonialism of Orde Baru. The Netherlands government assumes Tan Malaka as a figure of movement who has to be feared, respected, and hostility because of his courage and ideas. However, in Indonesia's educational history, Tan Malaka has been fallen into oblivion. This is a homework for all of us.

So, by the incident, what do you think is better, anarchy or rebellion?

I want to quote Ronny Agustinus' closing essay in the book Madilog, "For me, there is no intense things and make sense than to keep reading and writing."

"There are some lacks of interpretation and insight." Do you agree with it? Why?

Yeah. It is the result of the education system in Indonesia that is likely to undermine the community.

Can you say a word or phrase that maybe a solution of the situations we have talked about?

Everything begins from yourself. Let's read more the history of archipelago and visit every corner of it.
Thank you very much!
