The design direction for Black light was to emphasize Ralph Hotere’s artwork through the use of a
seven-column grid.

The book was divided into two sections with images running above the text. This rule was then broken to create a relationship between the text and images on a few pages. The dividing line can be seen by the colour placed over the Ralph Hotere portraits in the section openers.

The orange used throughout the book was sampled from ‘Big Red X’ to create visual highlights and to stop it looking too formal. The dust jacket carries on the theme of the book through using the same layout and colours as the chapter openers, creating cohesion throughout the artwork, book and dust jacket
