The grid below is a fairly fast look at some of the works I've done throughout my career with Boston Beer and Dogfish Head. Included are several beer labels I worked on from initial concepts, edits, redesigns, typography, copywriting, print production, to application. Additionally, I've included photos I had taken for marketing purposes or just a little experimentation and fun.
Some things to note regarding the Dogfish work.
- The label titled "Feed Me" is from my last label done for Dogfish, I was asked by my art director to get it started for him. I attended concept meetings and spoke with the collaborators on the beer to get a feel for what they wanted the visuals to be. What you see is where I ended up, sadly that was before I began working on the background.
- The flat 6-pack mechanical, 75 Minute IPA, was part of our Art Series where we work with a new artist annually to produce a series of four labels and a selection of prints to accompany the release. My job was to work with the artists, alongside my art director, in all stages of development. What you see there is the final print ready flat. I took the art provided, isolated all constituent layers and rebuilt within the confines of the template, did a touch of copywriting, and chose colors and dialed those in with our vendors before going into the final print stages prior to release.
Next up is a recent selection of work done with the Flint & Detroit, Michigan based production company STM. I collaborated with STM in the early stages of business planning and designed a whole suite of branding materials for them, the hand gripping the reel of film is their main logo mark. Also included is a series of behind the scenes images I shot, a release poster advertising a spot at a Michigan film festival, and a grab from their first short. I was lucky enough to work on set as a production assistant, and was asked to create the titles and font treatment for the final cut of the film.
Lastly, I just wanted to include a small selection of photos (some of which were shot on some old 35mm and developed in a closet), as well as two designs I simply had fun with. The poster sized image of the woman was initially going to be used for a beer dinner for Dogfish, unfortunately it was cancelled and that design went into hibernation.
Thank you for your consideration. ~Ian Cosgrove.
