I, along with 4 other super talented designers including Ryan Quickfall, Travis Hess, Tim Jones and Ken Davis created 20 table numbers each for A&W Restaurants resulting in 100 unique numbers. Each number is completely custom, there was no usage of any existing typefaces to create these numbers.
As the original chain of roadside restaurants, and a pioneer of carhops and cruise-ins, A&W has always been closely connected to car culture. So when tasked to design table numbers for the new A&W Burgers Chicken Floats restaurant concept, we wanted to give a distinct nod to this heritage, with vintage race car numbers as inspiration. The result is the A&W Numbers Project, a collaboration of five artists to design the one hundred numbers required, each with their own unique treatment.
