Is eggshell deserves to be thrown away?

Every year around the world, about 250,000 tons of eggshells are thrown away and it is not surprising that the majority of this number ends up in landfills. A question raised: Is eggshell just a useless material?
In fact, eggshells are an extremely calcium-rich material and very good for fertilizing plants. In art and creativity, eggshell gains a special role for their unique materials in lacquer paintings. In recent years, eggshell has made new strides by becoming the main raw source to create new sustainable materials, for exemple wall tiles from the Nature Squared brand collaborating with designer Elaine Yan Ling Ng.
From above, eggshell can become a very potential material thanks to many advantages such as low price, solid structure, flexibility and very environment-friendly. From our team perspective as designers, the Soli lamp was designed as a test to demonstrate this idea.

In this Soli collection, creativity is not only a matter of balancing aesthetics but also go hand in hand with respect and environmental protection. Materials are selected with consideration to limit as little as possible the impact on the environment after the product's life cycle ends. The lampshade is a combination of crushed eggshells, recycled pulp from old cardboard and milk glue. The finished product after being unmolded is sturdy, conducts light well and creates natural and unique lighting effects. The lamp body is a mixture of eggshell and cement, a material with high durability and longevity. The lamp body is created with eggshell to contributing to a solid structure, with an interesting touches from its terrazzo surface.
Although the Soli lighting is small, it will definitely spread warm natural light to every space in which it is present. Besides, the lamp body and the shape of a small astronaut bring an interesting personification, mixed with a bit of playful mischief and vitality. Regarding processing methods, Soli is formed through a semi-manual method, the mixture of materials after mixing in a certain ratio will be filled and shaped completely manually in the cavity of the mold. The finished product after de-molding will be uniform in size and design but still retain its uniqueness through the patterns on the product surface.
Creative work comes not only from breakthrough ideas but also from the ability to perceive and turn seemingly ordinary materials into unique works of art. The launch of the Soli lighting is an introduction to a completely new look from eggshells - a potential material in the creative field, accompanied by a message affirming that we absolutely have can be creative while still maintaining a sustainable vision for the future of the planet.
