Dreams Come True ! My first Google doodle went live on the 25th of September 2023.
Celebrating the SA Jazz legend - Todd Matshikiza. A few months ago I was approached by the design team at Google to create a Google doodle that would celebrate the life, legacy and musical genius of South African Jazz legend ~ Todd Matshikiza. It was a full circle dream moment, from the first email all the way up to the launch of the Google Doodle. I researched and listened to so much jazz, I danced, I drew, I prayed, I gave thanks. In my final years at university we had a project that was all about the history of South African Jazz Music. This is like more than 10 years ago, I didn’t own a personal computer and resources were scarce. I would sneak into university on weekends just to work on that project and listen to jazz albums late into the night as I dreamed about my future in design. So when Google got in touch about this project, I knew that it was a home run. All my knowledge and love for Jazz thrusted me at full speed into this venture. I got to dive deep into Todd Matshikiza’s legacy, into his incredible archive of music. I learnt about stories of struggle that were told through song. It was a magical journey and I can’t really explain what this means to me.
It’s surreal. To God be the glory, I am humbled, thankful and so grateful to have had this opportunity.
