Dance Video: Grey or Great?

Year: 2020
Role: Creative Producer, Video Editor, and Dancer
Description: Getting trapped in a crampy and colorless life, a person starts to figure out their new ways of life by coloring their dreams through tonal of colors.
Inspiration

I produced this video for a high-school contest of media creativity during the pandemic. At that time, I was just stucking in the apartment for 6-month straight without having any chance to excitingly travel anywhere except going through books, internet, music, or simply my dreams. It came to a point that I desired to combine all of those factors to delineate my chaotic and strangle state of mind.

Creative Process

Audiographing: I started listening to ITZY's music in different remix version and imagined the connection between the songs. After that, I used Premiere Pro to produce the mash-up version for the video and practiced the choreography.

Scripting and Filming: I visualized the stories with the scenes that I needed to film. During that process, I also sketched and wrote out my ideas on papers. I also challenged myself to film everything in my apartment and utilized all the space and the resources that I haved without purchasing any additional equipments. I started to film in two days with the support of my sister with the Iphone XS Max camera. Instead of filming in a linear way based on the script, I arranged scenes in one room to be filmed at the same time for the convenience of setting up.

Editing: After finishing the filming process, I came to the editing part. Based on my intuition, I kept editing effects that are captivating and visual appealing on Premiere Pro, Photoshop, and After Effects while modifying some part in the structure of the story. I learned new editing concepts through tutorials on Youtube and also tweaked the effects for more individualized experience.
Challenges
1. The scene is limited to small space of the apartment I am living.
2. I do not possess any professional equipment for the production, especially post-production.
3. There were only me and my sister for the whole filming process requiring heavy set up.
4. There were many times I lost belief in myself while producing the video and just wanted to give up in the middle of nowhere.
5. I was afraid to publish the product.

Lessons
1. Self-doubt is common in creative journey.
2. Cinematography and smooth transitions.
3. How to effectively use a normal laptop for heavy editing with massive effects (i.e. using nested sequence and proxy for efficient and smooth preview).
4. Hard-skill: masking, color grading with color separation, reverse speed, text timing.
5. Be passion and patient.

Future Inquiries
1. Is being vulnerable common in the creative journey, especially during the publication?
2. How to determine the border between the concept of an inspiration and a copy?
