‘Spaces and Places’. The aim was to select a space or a place and produce work that reflects the “essence” of that chosen space. My chosen place was ‘the cinemas’. The way I see it, a movie hall is like a “doorway” into a new world. A movie allows me to dwell into a fictional world, and in that sense, I like to think of the cinemas as the core symbol of ‘fantasy v/s reality’. By taking inspiration from the works of Wes Anderson and fairy tales like J.M. Barrie’s Peter Pan and his concept of Neverland, I created my own space or a set which used dreamlike elements like mirrors, lights and butterflies to create a fantasy world in the presence of reality. Concepts like escapism and reflection were a part of my process. The quotation “Lights, Camera, Action!” really stuck to me and I used the same to create the outcome. So I used elements indicating these three terms respectively: Lights: Experimenting with different tinted lights and shadows; Camera: Mirrors and reflection; Action: Creating a video to capture the ‘essence’ of the space. The final outcome was expressed through photographs and a short video to capture the spirit of cinemas halls. My space includes a single seat watching in an empty movie theatre, a way of projecting the massive impact the pandemic has had on the film industry.
