The modernization of digital media, in combination with the
actions of various architectural movements, has enriched the
architectural vocabulary and the proposals for the configuration
of the space (Uoggrinis, 2009). Many structures around the world
have undergone one or more modifications during their life cycle,
whether it involves their inner or outer shell, or their spatial or
structural system. In architecture, the modular approach has been
associated with geomτetry, the spatial placement of elements and
has recently been linked to the construction industry; and in many
countries, it has been widely accepted as a preferred solution
compared to “conventional” construction methods (Lema Scarsi,
2016). The present research thesis deals with the issue of the synthesis
of similar modules in modular constructions. Initially, the different
interpretations of the terms are presented, the types of modular
architecture are distinguished, its historical and theoretical context
is pointed out, while the design and construction process of the
structures is described. In addition, the reasons that contributed
to the frequent adoption of modular techniques compared to
the past are analyzed, the typologies of constructions based on
certain criteria, their advantages and the reasons that do not favor
their application are underlined. Finally, a critical classification
and study of certain constructions that consist exclusively of the
synthesis of similar modules is carried out and useful conclusions are
drawn. By reviewing the available bibliography, the paper aims to
clarify the concepts that refer to modular architecture and seeks
to provide answers to the research questions that were posed.
